The Kentucky Commission on Women encourages annual events that promote, encourage, and honor women around the Commonwealth.
Annual Women's Equality Day
At the order of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as Women’s Equality Day. Although the date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote, the observance of Women’s Equality Day also was a call to attention to continuing efforts toward full equality. This year, the Kentucky Commission on Women is encouraging Kentuckians to recognize the sacrifices and efforts of suffragists by registering to vote.
