The Kentucky Commission on Women is dedicated to
elevating the status of women and girls in the Commonwealth,
empowering them to overcome barriers to equity, and
expanding opportunities to achieve their fullest potential.

The Kentucky Commission on Women encourages annual events that promote, encourage, and honor women around the Commonwealth.

Annual Women's Equality Day

At the order of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as Women’s Equality Day. Although the date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote, the observance of Women’s Equality Day also was a call to attention to continuing efforts toward full equality.  (Source: National Women’s History Project, 2013)

The Kentucky Commission on Women invited organizations to host a Women’s Equality Day Event by showing the PBS film documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America.” This excellent film, narrated by Oscar-winning actress and activist Meryl Streep, gives an in-depth, bipartisan examination of the women’s movement in America over the past 50 years.
